Wikis

I never really knew that much about wikis until this class. I knew about Wikipedia, but that's about it. I never even thought about incorporating wikis, blogs or digital stories into the classroom but there are many ways it can be done. This link shows how two schools on opposite sides of the world who use web 2.0 tools to communicate in a project called A Celebration of Learning an Culture. These two teachers have worked together for over a year to have their first graders pen pal with one another through wikis, blogs and digital stories. What a great idea!!

  1. I too never had much experience with blogs, knew much about wikis, or even heard about digital stories until this class. I have had friends who have blogs, which I have sometimes read—but other than that my experience with blogs has been pretty minimal. In the case of Wikis—I am just like you are. I knew about Wikipedia and that is it. I knew that you could add/take off information from Wikipedia—but I never imagined creating my own wiki (or a classroom wiki). I have been really interested in learning all of the different ways to incorporate these technologies into our future classrooms.
The link that you provided in your post was really neat! I think that it is a fantastic idea that these two teachers came up with. I definitely want to try to integrate that into my classroom next year. If I could not locate a teacher from across the world, I would locate one within this country. I think that having pen pals across the country would be just as interesting for the students. I am going to look at this link more thoroughly to try and get more ideas. Thanks for sharing!
